Nomination Essay
I would like to nominate Shelly Van Dyne, National Director of Independence and Regulatory Compliance in the National Office of Risk Management of McGladrey & Pullen, LLP. Shelly has been my career advisor for over two years and in those two years I have witnessed her exemplify quality, integrity, morality and a great sense of humor!
Shelly is encouraging and supportive of my professional and personal growth; and even cheers me on before a major exam/challenge. She was there for me as I studied and took the test for the CAPM exam - not only supporting my decision to meet this challenge, but encouraging me when I didn't pass the exam. Shelly is always looking out for what may be best for me. Despite the potential loss of my being on her team, she was willing to approve my transfer to a different area for more challenging work, telling me that I would most likely be happier and continue to be successful in this different area. [The transfer ended up not happening.]
Shelly treats everyone with respect and provides them with the attention they deserve regardless of their level or personality. She works patiently when a question is raised. Shelly will find the answer if she does not know it and respond in a timely fashion. Shelly is looked upon as a knowledgeable and trustworthy resource when it comes to Firm Independence and the rules and regulations that we must operate within. She is ‘on call’ to our external client serving employees as well as being an available resource to our national office professionals.
I admire and respect Shelly. She has a young family and is an advocate of work/life balance willing to experiment with different remote work options to accommodate her direct reports and still support the company and our department to its fullest. I currently have a flexible work option where one day a week I work from my home office. Shelly has always been supportive and available to work with me since I’ve been with the National Office of Risk Management. Even when others may not feel working out of the office is efficient, I have been able to accommodate their needs – even remotely. With Shelly’s support, Flexible Work Options are successful for our team.
Shelly works with the highest of integrity and honesty. I appreciate her down-to-earth style and open-door policy. Thank you, Shelly, for being an example for other leaders in our firm!
